Chinese automaker denies rumors of motorcycle launch
Chinese auto giant BYD has denied it plans to launch an electric motorcycle/scooter after some patent drawings sparked speculation in recent news reports.
“We reiterate: BYD is focusing on its main businesses now and in the future and has no plans to make motorcycles,” says Li Yunfei, the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker’s general manager, in a report on CnEVPost.com.
The motorcycle’s design patent drawings were made public on September 10. The patent’s description shows that BYD owns it, sparking speculation that the automaker will launch motorcycles.
Notably, there were rumors about BYD launching electric motorcycles in May, when CnEVPost says some images were circulated on social media.
BYD is the world’s largest EV maker and the world’s second-largest battery manufacturer.
In addition to BYD Electronic’s OEM business, FinDreams Battery, BYD’s battery manufacturing arm, stated in February it could use its battery technology to develop two-wheeler batteries with improved safety after a fire in a Chinese province was blamed on e-bike batteries.
