Powersports mechanic moves business into new building, expands services

Norway, Michigan, maintenance and repair shop Preferred Powersports is expanding its operations and moving into a new storefront, a longstanding former industrial space that will provide more room for owner Chris Menacher’s growing powersports mechanic business.

First featured in a profile story in the Iron Mountain Daily News, Menacher, a 12-year-veteran mechanic, says he runs a one-man repair shop and offers a wide range of services, including tune-ups, brake service, diagnostics, electrical repairs, tire mounting, engine, transmission, and suspension work.

“I do everything from routine maintenance to full engine rebuilds, along with a wide range of accessory installs,” he told The Daily News.

Menacher is a graduate of the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix, is MMI-certified, and holds certifications with Yamaha and Polaris. He also works on the other three Japanese brands and BRP machines, and the shop has Can-Am and Polaris diagnostic systems.

In addition to the expanded space — which has allowed Menacher to perform more motorcycle maintenance —  the move has opened the door for a better relationship with aftermarket distributor Parts Unlimited.

“I have access to a lot more and quicker delivery,” Menacher told The Daily News.

The 1940s-era building is approximately 2,400 square feet. It underwent extensive restoration, Menacher says, including insulation, new interior metal walls, upgraded electrical systems, windows, a garage door, and office space.

The business also received a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which helped fund a new ATV lift.

Preferred Powersports, which officially opened June 1, is located at 604 Hacey St. in Norway.
