Triumph continues to expand its already broad offering of 500cc-plus motorcycles with the addition of three new Cruisers, including the all-new Thunderbird LT and Thunderbird Commander, and two Special Edition models for 2014.
The new Thunderbird models sport the existing Thunderbird Storm’s big bore 1700cc parallel twin engine in an all-new frame that features improved ergonomics and updated suspension geometry for incredible all-around comfort and performance with a fresh new look. These join the new America LT that features a host of touring accessories as standard fare.
In addition to the 2014 Bonneville T100 Special Edition, which receives a special black paint scheme and trim befitting its 1960s classic style, is the Tiger 800XC SE. This limited edition adventure bike gets a distinctive, fresh look that complements the tough and capable characteristics of the standard 800XC model.
The All-New Thunderbird Chassis
The 2014 Thunderbird LT and Thunderbird Commander get an all-new chassis for improved rider and passenger comfort while enhancing the bike’s overall performance. The redesigned frame pushes the steering neck forward and lowers the seat pan one inch (30mm) to offer more room for rider and passenger. That allows for a reshaped seat with deeper, dual density foam padding and lumbar support that maximizes comfort while maintaining a low 27.5” (700mm) unladen seat height.
Pushing the steering neck forward allows for the use of pull-back handle bars that produce a more relaxed riding position for longer trips. Steering geometry has been updated to optimize rider input and handling with the new handle bars and wider front wheel and tire combination. Both models sport a new 140/75 17-inch front tire to accompany the existing 200/50 17-inch rear tire. For optimum performance, Triumph partnered with Avon Tyres to develop the world’s first radial white wall motorcycle tires for the Thunderbird LT.
Handling is further enhanced by suspension components worthy of sportier bikes. Both models feature shrouded 47mm Showa forks and twin 5-way preload adjustable Showa rear shocks with optimized dual-rate springs. Braking is handled by Triumph’s anti-lock brake system with four-pot Nissin calipers on 310mm floating discs up front, and a single Brembo caliper and 310mm disc at the rear.
Both new models receive the Thunderbird Storm’s big bore 1700cc water-cooled parallel twin engine. Powered by a pair of saucer-sized forged pistons, the eight-valve, DOHC engine’s uneven 270° firing interval and long-stroke design produce a potent 93bhp (94PS) at 5400rpm and a huge 111lbs.ft. (151Nm) of torque at a lowly 3550rpm. This power is harnessed by a progressive throttle, highly accurate fuel mapping, cutting-edge sequential fuel injectors, a positive six-speed gearbox and belt-drive for low maintenance and long life.
Triumph’s new 2014 Thunderbird LT (Light Touring) is designed to make each and every journey the trip of a lifetime, transporting you with effortless power and style to new adventures with the easy-going, laid-back vibe of a premium classic touring cruiser.
The quick-release windshield is durable and provides copious wind protection, while the removable leather saddlebags have been redesigned to be larger and more resilient than previous panniers. Auxiliary spotlamps, high quality chrome footboards with replaceable skid plates, an adjustable chrome heel/toe gear lever and wide wire-spoke rims complete the touring package.
Unsatisfied with the inferior performance of existing bias-ply whitewall tires, Triumph partnered with British tire manufacturer Avon to develop the world’s first whitewall radial motorcycle tire. The result is a no-compromise solution to blending classic styling and modern performance.
The Thunderbird LT’s strong visual appeal is enhanced by detailing that closely follows classic touring cruiser tradition. The comprehensive list of premium details includes broad chrome embellishers on the deep, two-piece front and rear mudguards, generous chrome highlights around the windshield and yokes, single front headlight and auxiliary spotlamps, wire-spoked wheels, one-off Triumph tank badges, white piping around the sumptuous seat, 1930s Art Deco-style rear indicator and LED tail light assemblies, and hand-painted coach-lines decorating the two-tone tank and mudguard.
Available from authorized Triumph dealers in Spring 2014, the Thunderbird LT is available in two distinctive color options: Caspian Blue/Crystal White or Lava Red/Phantom Black.
Triumph’s new 2014 Thunderbird Commander gives riders the power and the presence to dominate every road and every ride with all-day comfort, accessibility, and that uniquely Triumph look and exhaust note that stir the soul.
Triumph’s signature twin headlamps peer out from the Commander’s massive, polished top yoke and polished stainless steel fork shrouds. The custom cruiser look follows through with internal handlebar wiring, bespoke Commander badges, and Art Deco LED tail light and rear indicator assembly for that low, fat cruiser look.
Two striking two-tone paint options complete the picture: Lava Red / Crimson Sunset or Phantom Black / Storm Grey. The Thunderbird Commander will be available in authorized dealers in Spring 2014.
Both the Thunderbird LT and Thunderbird Commander include a coded key immobilizer, self-cancelling indicators and a massive 5.8 gallon (22 liter) fuel tank with off-center filler cap. Both bikes also feature well-appointed, tank-mounted dash consoles with a classic, analogue-style speedometer, and an LCD display with fuel gauge (including range-to-empty), twin trips, odometer and clock functions that are all conveniently navigated with a handlebar-mounted button.
Based on the existing Triumph America, the new America LT (Light Touring) adds a layer of touring capability with a range of factory-fitted extras designed to make long distance riding comfortable and convenient, while maintaining the traditional deep chrome and polished detailing demanded of a classic cruiser.
The tall windshield deflects the worst of the wind and weather but is quickly and easily detached for an alternative look. High, wide bars drop back toward the rider for a comfortable, broad-shouldered handlebar position. The America LT’s compact center of gravity provides excellent low-speed handling and, coupled with a low seat height, is easy to maneuver even in parking lots and on loose surfaces. High-quality aluminum footboards with removable skid plates come with a classic heel/toe gear shift, positioning the rider’s feet for maximum comfort and control. Generous leather saddlebags come with metal buckles over durable, easy-to-use plastic clips, while the passenger backrest adds all-day comfort.
Power is a healthy 60bhp (61PS) at 6800rpm, with 53lbs.ft. (72Nm) of torque at a low-revving 3300rpm, delivered via an uneven 270° firing interval for the off-beat feel it shares with the other Triumph parallel twin cruisers.
From a cross-town hop to a cross-continent tour, the America LT will take you there in style. It is available in two-tone Pacific Blue/Sapphire Blue and will be available in Triumph dealerships in December 2013 with an MSRP of $9,499.
Tiger 800XC SE
At first glance, the Tiger 800XC SE’s Volcanic Black paint looks like a simple black finish. But when sunlight catches it, red metallic highlights burst through and further complement the fiery red main frame, black exhaust heat shields and black pillion grab rails. The Tiger 800XC SE’s unique characteristics are rounded out with black finished handlebars and matte-finished Diablo Red cockpit infills for a more performance-oriented feeling.
Arriving at Triumph dealerships in March 2014, this special edition maintains the same running gear as the standard Tiger 800XC, powered by Triumph’s 799cc inline triple engine. With a flat torque curve and refined power delivery that’s earned accolades worldwide, the Tiger 800XC is a pleasure to ride in the most demanding on-road and off-road conditions. A sophisticated anti-lock braking system is standard and can be deactivated for off-road riding. Additional standard features include adjustable handle bar position and seat height, a coded-key immobilizer, and rear rack with generous pillion grab handles.
The tough steel chassis is equipped with long-travel 45mm upside down front forks and rear suspension unit, plus a 21” spoked front wheel for maximum ground clearance on rough trails. With a high-level front mudguard and sturdy hand guards, the 800XC has been developed to cope with demanding conditions.
The Tiger 800XC SE will be available in March 2014 with an MSRP of $12,499.
