Don’t stop

Mark Mooney Blog“I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.” — Mary Oliver

Hope springs eternal with every new season and new year. With every new day, we are afforded the opportunity to make a difference. Whether it’s in your personal life or business life, you are going to get that chance today. What type of difference do you want to make today, this week or this year? Will you take advantage of those opportunities consistently, or when the mood strikes you?

Success begins when we set out to make a positive difference in all that we do, every day. It means getting up when we fall down, or helping someone else up when they do. It’s always taking the high road in action and example, as you never know who’s watching and is looking at you as role model.

Many times in my own dealership I sat down with a team member or new hire to express what I wanted from them more than anything. It was this: No matter how long they worked in the dealership, or what they did, that it was done with all their might. And that when their time came to an end and they left us, they left a better individual as a result of their time with us. This might sound a bit corny, but it meant a lot to me, and hopefully it meant more to the folks that worked and walked through those dealership doors every day.

For many of us, reflecting on the past is the norm at the beginning of every new year. It’s a time when hindsight becomes forethought and what we did, or didn’t, takes on new meaning. As you reflect on the past and ponder the future, perhaps it’s time to give ample consideration on what and how you will make a positive difference with the opportunities before you and your dealership this year.

Do all the actions exhibited in your dealership daily make a positive statement to all who may be observing, team members and clients alike? Are you consistent in your practices and procedures? There’s nothing more frustrating than inconsistency in business, and hindsight generally points that out. If you lead by example and your dealership is a reflection of that leadership, are you pleased with what you see?

You should be able to answer yes to all those questions, without hesitation. If you can’t, you just happen to be in luck. Today you’re going to be afforded the opportunity to make a positive difference in how you do things. You will be given this opportunity every day this new year, but it’s up to you take advantage of it. Make it happen, be the difference, and don’t stop.
