Suzuki technology receives rare designation

A Suzuki two-wheel model that features fuel-cell technology has achieved a rare certification milestone.

The Suzuki Burgman scooter that possesses a zero-emissions technology has become the first vehicle that will not have to be inspected and tested individually in the European Union, according to a company press release.

This designation, called “Whole Vehicle Type Approval,” means the vehicle has met standards for safety and performance, “representing a milestone in making environmentally-friendly, zero-emissions transportation commercially available for the public,” the press release noted.

The Suzuki fuel-cell technology produces electricity through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in the air, and discharges only water in the process, according to a company website.

Suzuki did not say when the vehicle would be available for commercial markets, including for North America, and noted on its website that it continues vehicle testing.
