Michigan Senate Approves Snowmobiles Along Freeways

Senators in Michigan unanimously approved Senate Bill 161 that would let snowmobilers ride along expressways under certain conditions. The bill, which passed 38-0 in a May 18 vote, would allow snowmobilers to ride in a freeway right of way if the Department of Natural Resources designates it as a snowmobile trail and the Department of Transportation approves.
The bill is a result of difficulties with a proposed snowmobile trail connecting the towns of Gaylord and Cheboygan; landowners have expressed concern about noise and safety issues. The bill would require snowmobiles to travel single-file except when passing another snowmobile, all only in approved areas.
The legislation, which has the support of Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, was sponsored by Sen. Jason Allen (Rep., Traverse City). It was sent to the House for consideration.
