Segway Recalls Transporters

Segway, Inc., Bedford, N.H., has recalled more approximately 23,500 of its Segway Personal Transporter (PT), also known as the Segway Human Transporter (HT).
The recall involves all Segway models sold from March 2002 through mid-September 2006.
Segway says the unit can unexpectedly apply reverse torque to the wheels, which can cause a rider to fall. This can occur when the device is tilted back by the Speed Limiter and the rider comes off and then back onto the device within a short period of time.
The company has received six reports of the personal transporter not operating properly, resulting in injuries to the head and wrist of users.
Consumers are asked to stop using the Segway PT immediately and contact the company to receive a free software upgrade.
Prices for the Segway range from $4,000 to $5,500.
