California dealership closes after 46 years

Powersports Business has learned that John Burr Cycles, located in Fontana, California, is closing after 46 years in operation. The dealership carried a range of motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, scooters, personal watercraft and generators from CFMOTO, Honda, Honda Power Equipment, Husqvarna, Kawasaki and Yamaha.

The dealership’s most recent Enewsletter states: “We have closed. Thank you for being loyal customers since 1972. We loved being here for you. Join us Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. for our blowout clearance sale this weekend for parts and accessories.”

The dealership was an avid off-road supporter, offering free ride days for motorcycle and ATV riders frequently at Glen Helen Raceway.

The following is from the “About Us” page on the dealership’s website at johnburrcycles.com.

“The Burr family was involved in the motorcycle industry for over 50 years. John Burr Sr. started in the business in 1947. John Burr Cycles formally opened in October of 1970 as a Suzuki dealership by John Burr Sr. John Sr. was previously was a GM at Harrison Reno Honda in San Bernardino, California, for 21 years. When the opportunity arose, he opened his own dealership with four employees, including himself, in a small building on Foothill Blvd. in Fontana.

“In April of 1971, John was able to secure the Honda franchise, which led to a need for a larger facility. The business moved to 9660 Sierra, south of its current location, in November of 1972. As a result of the move, Suzuki elected to cancel the franchise and John Burr Cycles became a Honda-only dealership.

“In March of 1975, John Sr. negotiated a deal to purchase Jim Fishback’s Yamaha of Fontana. The dealership then moved to the current location and became a Honda – Yamaha dealership. The service department was built in 1980 and the metal storage building in the back was built in 1982. In June of 1998, John Burr Cycles purchased the Kawasaki franchise from Fontana Motorcycles and stayed a three-line dealership until present.

“Today we are still a family-owned business where we specialize in the off-road market and we take pride in our business of helping other motorcycle & dirt bike enthusiasts like you in southern California & beyond.”

  1. You made my day in 1983. Still have the bike as well as your license plate holder. It is cracked and I look you up to see if I could find a replacement. Trying to keep it all original. Sad to see that you are closed. Good memories. All my best to you and your family.
