Canadian Harley dealer says retaliation tariffs will drive off customers

A Canadian-based motorcycle dealer is already anticipating blowback from retaliatory tariffs, as he tells Canadian news outlet 650 CKOM, nearly every product in his Harley-Davidson dealership will be subject to the 50-cent tax.

Hertzog says he sidestepped the original 25% tariffs implemented in March 2025, when H-D was able to get products from Thailand instead of the U.S. However, Hertzog is back to ordering supply from the U.S., after shipping changed yet again. (Photo: Prairie Harley-Davidson/Facebook)

Canada implemented a new 50% counter-tariff on Sept. 8 on U.S.-origin motorcycles with engine displacements greater than 800cc, an increase from the 25% counter-tariff already in place.

Robb Hertzog, owner of Prairie Harley-Davidson in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, tells 650 CKOM that the added tax will effectively cost him business.

“It’ll affect everything we bring in because everything that we get, unfortunately, is U.S.,” he says. “We don’t have an alternative in Canada to switch over to.”

Hertzog predicts the 50% tariff could very well double the price of his machines — essentially what was a $20,000 bike is now $40,000.

“It’s going to make it very difficult to try to sell our product if this goes through and continues on,” he says.

He says trying to create a proper budget is incredibly difficult because trade negotiations have been a “moving target.”

“Life, as everybody knows, has changed so much that even to try to do a budget, it changes daily.”
