Troy Lee designs original artwork for Red Bull Glen Helen National poster
News release
Ever since it became a staple stop of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, in 1996, Glen Helen Raceway has stood out thanks to its longstanding relationship with legendary motorsports artist Troy Lee, who has produced original artwork for the track’s marquee events ever since. Recently, Lee and Glen Helen unveiled the colorful one-of-a-kind design that would be featured as the official event poster of the 2014 Red Bull Glen Helen National, presented by Yamaha, on Saturday, May 24.
The 2014 artwork is the first that Lee has designed for Glen Helen since it last hosted the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship during the 2009 season. However, in both 2010 and 2011, Lee also provided custom artwork for the FIM World Motocross Championship (MXGP) rounds at Glen Helen that served as the United States Grand Prix.
Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, a close friend of Lee and collaborator in the new Seven MX line of clothing and gear, and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely, a longtime rider for Lee’s supercross and motocross racing team, are prominently featured on the poster. Looming in the background is the towering “Mt. Saint Helen,” the tallest obstacle in all of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
“I first approached Troy back in 1996 with this idea. I saw it as a way to really stand out and give our track it’s own identity,” said track owner Bud Feldkamp. “Back then an event poster was a big deal and was one of the primary ways you were able to communicate the details of your event. It was a huge success and Troy’s continued to provide us with original artwork ever since.
“Troy’s an exceptionally talented guy and it’s been an honor to work with him for all these years with such a unique project. I continue to get compliments from people all over the world about how great these posters look and I feel fortunate to have the very first poster framed in my office.”
Lee established himself as a prominent figure in the motorsports world by creating custom helmet designs for drivers in Formula 1, NASCAR, IndyCar, and all other prominent forms of car racing. However, Lee’s passion has always been in motocross, picking up the hobby of painting helmets out of his parents’ garage while racing dirt bikes as a teenager. Over the last 30 years Lee’s hobby has grown into an empire, including clothing and protective riding gear for motorcycles and bicycles. This has allowed him to also build one of the most prominent teams in the sport of motocross, all while continuing to provide the world with the distinct style that is a trademark of the Troy Lee Designs brand.
