KTM Plans to Show Car in 2007

KTM plans to unveil a two-seat automobile in March at the Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland.
KTM CEO Stefan Pierer discussed the unit with Powersports Business at the recent KTM Dealer Meeting in Portland, Ore. The as-of-yet un-named vehicle is being produced in partnership with Germany’s Audi AG and Italian sportscar designer Dallara Automobili.
While the car will run off of a gearbox, transmission and turbo-charged two-liter four-cylinder engine from Audi, Pierer was quick to point out that much of the work on the unit was done in Austria – “The chassis, design, suspension, everything is coming from KTM,” he said.
The direct-injection powerplant from Audi produces 220 hp out of the box and 260 hp in a tuned version. KTM’s two-seat cabriolet with a carbon-fiber policoque chassis will boast 240 hp.
“We want to stay around 1,465 lbs., so related to 240 hp it has incredible acceleration,” Pierer said. “We’re looking at 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds.”
KTM’s plan is to sell 1,000-1,500 units per year starting in Europe and the Far East. In Europe, consumers will have to dole out about Euro 40,000.
Will the vehicle be available in the U.S.? In the short term: No. However, Pierer said California and other Sun Belt states are markets too promising to ignore.
