Yamaha, Honda Design New Transmission Options
Yamaha’s 2006 FJR1300AE comes with a newly developed electric-shift five-speed transmission that eliminates the clutch lever entirely, allowing riders to click off shifts using either bar-mounted paddles or the foot-operated gearshift lever.
However, while Yamaha’s computer operated clutch and electronic shift actuators are an industry first, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. also is developing a mechanism designed to simplify the shifting process on large-sized motorcycles – a Human Fitting Transmission (HFT), similar to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
HFT was introduced on Honda’s 680cc concept DN-01, currently being shown at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show. DN-01 stands for the first (01) vehicle developed under Honda’s Dream New (DN) concept.
The newly adopted hydraulic mechanical continuously variable HFT system features two types of full automatic modes as well as a six-speed manual mode which the rider operates through buttons located on the handle.
Honda says the HFT is the first hydraulic mechanical continuously variable transmission system in the world to be equipped with a lock-up mechanism, which improves fuel efficiency while offering a smooth ride without feeling the shock normally associated with gear shifts, even when cornering.
Honda says the DN-01 is being developed in the concept of a comfortable sports cruiser, with the goal of creating new value for the customer by proposing a new level of riding pleasure.
The company says it will continue the development of DN-01 with the goal of introducing it to the market in the near future.
