H-D Dealer Runs for Mayor of San Diego

Myke Shelby, owner of San Diego Harley-Davidson, is one of 15 people hoping to serve as mayor of the Southern California city of 1.23 million people.
Shelby, also known as “New York” Myke, is a Republican running under the Libertarian wing of the party. He has run twice for a seat in the California State Assembly, in 2000 and 1998, and was a leading opponent of the state’s helmet law in the 1990s.
The race leads up to a July 26 special election to replace Mayor Dick Murphy. Just months after being re-elected in a contentious mayoral race, Murphy announced he was resigning effective July 15.
A majority winner in the election would serve out the duration of Murphy’s term, which expires in December 2008. A run-off election would be necessary if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.
