Tire puncture repair tool wins 2019 Good Design Award

The winners of Australia’s peak industry design awards — the highest honor for design and innovation in the country — were announced this month at the 61st annual Good Design Awards Ceremony.

MotoPressor 4in1 Puncture Repair Tool, designed by Greg and Janice Jansen of Rocky Creek Designs, based in Dunoon, New South Wales, received a prestigious Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Product Design category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.

The annual Good Design Awards is Australia’s most prestigious international Awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. The Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design and reward emerging areas of design strategy, social impact and design entrepreneurship.

The Good Design Awards Jury spent several days evaluating each entry according to a strict set of design criteria which covers ‘good design’, ‘design innovation’ and ‘design impact’. Projects recognized with a Good Design Award must demonstrate excellence in all areas and convince the Jury they are worthy of recognition. 

Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia said: “Receiving a Good Design Award at this level is a significant achievement given the very high caliber of entries received this year.”

“Australia’s Good Design Award is more than a symbol of design excellence, it represents the hard work and dedication towards an innovative outcome that will ultimately improve our quality of life. These projects showcase the brilliance of design and the potential it has to improve our world,” said Gien.

The Good Design Awards Jury praised MotoPressor 4in1 Puncture Repair Tool commenting: “A compact and highly functional puncture repair tool with an industrial look that goes with the motorcycle aesthetic. The complete package and storage pouch is clever for the amount of tools making it small enough to fit in your pocket.”

The Good Design Awards attracted a record number of submissions with close to 700 design projects evaluated in this year’s international design awards.

So, what makes the award winning Motopressor Puncture Repair Tool different? 

Greg Jansen of Rocky Creek Designs says:  “We designed a “4 in 1 multi-tool” that uses pre-vulcanized repair strings and the whole package stores in a sheath small enough to fit in your pocket.  The tool contains a pair of pliers, a rasp, an insertion tool and a knife, including 5 strings.

What’s different about our repair strings?  They are pre-vulcanized, so no more little tubes of glue.  The “repair string” plugs the hole AND leaves a “patch style” repair on the INSIDE of your tire. 

The whole kit is super portable, easy to use and stores in a sheath measuring a mere 5.11 x 1.5 x 1.2 inches.

Greg and Janice Jansen moved up to the Northern Rivers in 2004 where they started planting 18,000 coffee trees on their Dunoon property.  During that time, their brand, Hills of Byron, won numerous awards for outstanding taste. 

Both Greg and Janice are motorcycle riders and have a passion for seeking new and innovative ideas.  Janice’s background is sourcing promotional gifts for companies seeking gift with purchase items with their brand name and handling the public relations side of the business, so together, they formed Rocky Creek Designs, which has taken them on a totally different path.  

“We have built the business from one product which we designed back in 2010, called HELMETLOK,” Greg said. “This product was so successful that Harley-Davidson asked us to manufacture it for them with their logo on it. We were also approached by Schuberth Helmets to do the same for them, so the HELMETLOK is a well known and used, brand name.

“We then added line items to our portfolio and with the new MotoPressor Puncture Repair Tool, we have over 50 items in our range, 99 percent of which have been designed by us.”

“This Gold Design Award is a real feather in our cap,” said Janice. “We are very proud to have the ‘tick’ which means a great deal about the design of our product.”
