2016 Power 50 dealers named by Powersports Business

The editors of Powersports Business, the industry’s leading business-to-business trade magazine, announced the 2016 Power 50 dealerships tonight during an awards dinner at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Logan Powersports Group, a six-store dealership group with headquarters in Logan, West Virginia, was named the No. 1 dealer in North America for the second consecutive year.

“Despite economic headwinds that battered Logan’s local economy, Logan Powersports Group continued to stand out from the most competitive field of dealers in the Power 50 program’s four-year history,” said Powersports Business editor-in-chief Dave McMahon. “In true entrepreneurial fashion, Logan’s dealerships found effective ways to increase revenue and drive net profit to impressive increases.”

For the second year in a row, Logan Powersports Group acquired a new dealership location to bring its total store count to six. Sales of pre-owned units took a significant step forward, with some store locations selling up to 10 more used motorcycles per month compared to the previous year. But it’s been far from easy, according to Ratz.

“It has been a domino effect for the coal industry and the economy here in southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky,” he said. “The ‘war on coal’ that the Obama administration has waged on Appalachia has devastated our region. Since 2008, more than 10,000 miners have been laid off. The number of coal mines that have been shut down is alarming. The production of coal is down by millions of tons according to the West Virginia Coal Association. This means millions of dollars in lost wages.

“But the ripple effect spreads out to many more businesses. First it is the railroad, which has laid off many workers and more furloughs are likely to come in the next year. Then it is the trucking industry. If the coal is not dug out of the earth and sold, then there is nothing for the truckers to haul in this region. It continues to trickle down to the mining machine shops, the mine supply companies, the electrical supply businesses and other coal-related jobs. The economy continues to suffer from all of those layoffs and cutbacks. The next to suffer could be the grocery store down the road or the convenience store that sells gas and lunch items.

“Now we are seeing the effect in the school systems in most southern West Virginia counties. Teachers, counselors and administrators are being laid off on a daily basis. This wave of shutdowns then affects the basic tax system in the coal counties, forcing layoffs in many other jobs like at the courthouse. Even the local law enforcement agencies like the sheriff’s departments are affected. The funding for jobs is just not there.

“This is very alarming to us and we are also feeling the effects with walk-in traffic being slow in our dealerships. We have had to work harder and smarter than ever before bringing customers in from other towns and states as far as six hours away. However, with our chins held high we decided to make a few changes in our organization to bring in more revenue and improve on convenience to our customers, processes and procedures.”

Logan Powersports Group dealerships carry the following powersports brands: Arctic Cat, Bennche, CFMOTO, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KYMCO, Polaris, SSR, Star Motorcycles, Suzuki and Yamaha.

By being named the No. 1 dealer for the second time, Logan Powersports Group enters the Power 50 Hall of Fame, joining GO AZ Motorcycles of Scottsdale, Arizona, in the club for exceptional powersports retailers.
