Honda issues Gold Wing recall

Honda (American Honda Motor, Inc.) has issued a recall for 2,701 motorcycles when it was found that the air bag inflator may rupture. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the rider, resulting in serious injury or death.

The recall affects certain model year 2006-2010 Honda GL1800 (Gold Wing) motorcycles manufactured February 8, 2006, to May 14, 2009 originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or “Zone A.” Additionally, unless included in “Zone A” above, Honda is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 Honda GL 1800 (Gold Wing) motorcycles manufactured May 10, 2007, to May 14, 2009 originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or “Zone B.” Motorcycles not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These motorcycles are equipped with an air bag inflator assembled as part of the air bag module, used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag module containing the inflator, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda’s number for this recall is KA8.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1/888-327-4236 (TTY 1/800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

  1. It would seem that ALL of these bikes should be recalled for this airbag issue. Last time I checked Gold Wing riders get on their bikes and ride to all areas of the country (including places with high humidity). Hence, someone who bought their Gold Wing in New York and who rides down on their Gold Wing and spends their winters in Florida… could be at serious risk of their airbag degrading.

  2. I’m also surprised that Honda is not including all units. I believe they tried the same regional roll-out with the auto airbag recall, and look how well that went for them. I’m also surprised that NHTSA approved this plan. stay tuned…

  3. The dealer I purchased my Goldwing from (in Michigan) got it from a Honda warehouse in Ohio. So now, because I live in Michigan, it isn’t being recalled but if I had bought the same bike while living in Ohio or, if I sell it to someone in Ohio (just 35 miles away) it WOULD be recalled. So where is the logic in that? I know, I know – there isn’t any…
