Minnesota considers Slingshot law

Minnesota legislature may soon change to reflect the decision of several senators, according to an article in the Grand Forks Herald.

Several members debated a change in legislation that would allow owners to operate a Polaris Slingshot without a motorcycle license, noting that it was so car-like that users should only need a driver’s license.

Senator LeRoy Stumpf, commented, “What we are trying to do with this legislation is help the new autocycle. … It currently is kind of stuck in the definition of a motorcycle but … has a steering wheel and everything like a car has.”

  1. If a motorcycle endorsement is not needed, there is no legitimate reason the vehicle should not meet DOT auto standards. It is not a motorcycle it is a sports car.

  2. Gordy – this is absolutely the crux of the issue. Clearly the Slingshot does not meet DOT auto crash standards, so calling it a “motorcycle” gives Polaris (and other 3-wheeler OEMs) a loophole.

Frankly, I’m surprised that the Legislature would want to go down this slippery slope. Are they someday going to allow manufacturers to sell cars in MN that don’t meet DOT standards? (not likely)
