Japanese OEMs decrease in production, export

Overall motorcycle production of Japanese motorcycles in September 2015 was recorded as 45,157 units. Compared with the 50,563 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, that’s a decrease of 5,406 units, or 10.7 percent. Motorcycle production has seen a decrease for 11 consecutive months, according to data from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Production was down in the majority of classes in September. The 50cc and under class was down 9.3 percent to 6,708 units. The 51-125cc class was the only class to increase production, with a 98-unit increase, or 4 percent. The 126-250cc class was down 1.9 percent, or 179 units. Finally, the over 250cc class was down 4,639 units, or 14.8 percent.

Overall motorcycle exports in September were recorded as 31,161 units. In comparison to September 2014, total exports decreased 16.4 percent, or 6,120 units.

Motorcycle exports experienced a decrease in each class, except one. The 50cc and under class was down 27.1 percent to 885 units. The 51-125cc class was up 35.2 percent, or 774 units, and was the only class to experience an increase. The 126-150cc class exported 6,465 units, which was down 6.3 percent from the previous year. Also, the over 250cc class was down 6,133 units, or 22.7 percent.
