Strider president McFarland receives SBA recognition

Strider Sports International, Inc., president and CFO Ryan McFarland has been named one of 53 Small Business Person of the Year winners by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The Person of Year winners represent the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. McFarland is the South Dakota winner, as Strider is based in Rapid City, S.D. He founded Strider after creating a pedal-less bicycle about nine years ago for his then-2-year-old son. Striders are sold in powersports dealerships, among other retailers, as a way to help children learn balance before hoping aboard their own dirt bike or pedal bicycle. Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, KTM, Suzuki, Yamaha and Cobra MOTO are among the companies that have partnered with Strider on co-branded bikes. To read a 2012 feature on Strider, click here.

McFarland will be honored with the other Person of the Year winners May 15-16 in Washington, D.C., during National Small Business Week.  There, one of the 53 winners will be chosen as the 2014 National Small Business Person of the Year. The winners will also be able to meet with top SBA officials and national business leaders.

As SBA Assistant Administrator Fred Baldassaro notified winners, he said, “Your hard work, innovative ideas and dedication to your community have helped you succeed. The SBA is pleased to recognize your achievements and your role in driving our nation’s economic growth.”
