Year-end motorcycle sales up slightly

In a small victory for the industry, total motorcycle sales were up 0.3 percent in 2011, the first year-over-year increase seen in five years, according to a report from the Motorcycle Industry Council.

Though growth of only 1,221 units isn’t huge, it’s a drastic change from the last few years. Just two years ago, sales hit extreme lows, with a 40.8 percent drop from 2008, and last year’s numbers dropped 15.8 percent from that.

Dual sport motorcycles and scooters were key to the increase, seeing 14.2 percent and 11.8 percent hikes, respectively. On-highway motorcycles also saw a year-over-year increase of 1.8 percent. Off-highway was the only motorcycle segment that saw a decrease in sales in 2011, with a 13.5 percent drop from 2010. ATV sales also decreased 13.5 percent for the year.
