What if you could ride anytime, anywhere, on any bike?

BY FRAN O’HAGAN

“You can ride anytime, anywhere, on any bike. This is essentially like having a bike in your suitcase.” That’s what EagleRider co-founder and CEO Chris McIntyre said over the weekend at the Long Beach IMS. McIntyre was talking about his company’s new subscription-based service, “Club EagleRider.” Pay a monthly fee, and ride the motorcycle you choose, departing from 149 different locations throughout the U.S.

You’re probably already familiar with EagleRider, which has a long history as a leading motorcycle rental company, but have you heard of the auto industry’s subscription-based alternatives to owning or leasing a car? Porsche, Cadillac, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and others have been experimenting with their offers, which allow customers to pay a flat monthly amount, which covers all costs — including insurance — and allows the customer to swap from model to model as they wish. Need a sport-utility this week, but want to drive a sports car next week?

Could the subscription model work for motorcycles? McIntyre noted about EagleRider that, “We’re not a rental company, we are an experience company.” What if motorcycle riders could punch some info into an app and have the specific motorcycle of their choice delivered to their home? An adventure tourer today, but a cruiser next week and a sport bike the following week?
