Canceled Snocross race puts ski hill in dire financial straits: report
A blizzard that hammered Duluth, Minnesota, earlier this week also forced the cancellation of the Amsoil Duluth National Snocross season-opening race at the city’s Spirit Mountain, according to a report in the Duluth News-Tribune.
Now, Spirit Mountain officials are asking the city to assist with a $235,000 subsidy to help it stay afloat through the holiday season. A Spirit Mountain official said in the Duluth News-Tribune article that the “event brings in an estimated $6 million to the city of Duluth, while Spirit Mountain is fortunate to break even.”
The Duluth City Council will consider the request Monday.
Somehow Spirit Mountain’s reliance on Snocross has been kept quiet until now. Probably because Minnesota’s “silent sports” advocates hate snowmobiles and would ban every one of them if they could. I think that this situation shows that recreational user groups should all cut each other some slack and show some civility whether motorized or non-motorized.
