Planning closure, Texas dealership stays open with new ownership

Honda of Houston, a Honda Powerhouse dealership that opened in 1994, announced in January that it would be closing its doors after 24 years in business. That closure was short-lived, however, as new ownership has taken over operations and it’s business as usual.

Here’s a press release from the new ownership:

HONDA OF HOUSTON RIDES ON!

FEBRUARY 1, 2018 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Honda of Houston, a Houston motorcycle institution for 24 years will ride on under new ownership and new management effective immediately.

Honda of Houston carries a full line of Honda Motorcycles, All Terrain Vehicles, Motor Scooters, Utility Vehicles for farm and ranch as well as Power Equipment such as pumps and generators.

A newly-formed Drake company, Drake Powersports, LLC has been formed and joins Cypress-based Drake Enterprises, Drake Plastics, Drake Medical, Drake Petroleum among others. Drake companies share common ownership of Steven Quance of Cypress.

The Honda of Houston name will continue to be used under DBA by Drake Powersports, LLC, who intends to assume the Honda franchise and bought the licenses and permits to do business from Dave Martin, Pro Cycles and Accessories DBA Honda of Houston.

The dealership will continue to operate at the amazing showroom and state of the art service facility located at 12655 West Road in Houston. The facility is owned by local proprietor and motorcycle enthusiast Tom Fichter. Mr. Fichter has been very cooperative in facilitating a smooth, seamless transition as have the fine people at American Honda Motor Co.

A combination of factors including US290 freeway construction, changing market conditions and undercapitalization forced previous owner Dave Martin to close the doors. He has graciously agreed to stay on during the transition.

Service Manager Shaun Martin (unrelated to owner) was looking for a partner to open a small motorcycle and ATV repair shop in order to continue his career. Through mutual friend Greg Hill, Shaun Martin and Quance were introduced- last Tuesday! Business advisor and Drake Property and Project Manager Joey King suggested checking with Honda to see if continuity of operations were possible. Jeffrey McCune, American Honda’s District Sales Manager immediately responded that it was, and for the right buyer was encouraged.

The asset only Buy/ Sell Agreement and Management Agreement were signed less than a week after initial discussions began with either Martin. Time was of the essence as American Honda was actively coordinating collecting the substantial (well over $1.0 MM) inventory at the store.
