Controversy brews over Myrtle Beach rally

Controversy has erupted as a Myrtle Beach, S.C., dealer has added dates to the area’s annual motorcycle rally events.

Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson announced on Jan. 20 that it plans to hold its Spring Cruisin’ the Coast rally May 18-28, extending already-planned rally dates eight days and pushing the Harley-Davidson rally against the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest, a sport bike rally, according to The Sun News in Myrtle Beach.

The original dates for the Myrtle Beach Bike Week stand as May 11-20. Instead of hosting its rally at the same time, Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson decided to piggyback off Bike Week and return the event to a three-week rally.

Jamin’ Jamie Keats, owner of Jamin’ Leather, told The Sun News that the first week, May 10-14 is for riders who want a slower, less busy rally. May 15-20 is traditionally a busy time when larger parties occur, and May 18-28, when the Cruisin’ the Coast rally begins, will include bike runs, charity events and other events, and it’s expected to be the busiest week. The Atlantic Beach Bike Week runs Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, in nearby Atlantic Beach.

The controversy has stemmed from the lengthening of the rally season, which has caused frustration from residents and the county council. The Horry County Council is even considering revoking all vendor permits for the month of May.
