Report: Snowmobile sales have strong start in Q4

The snowmobile season “has gotten off to a strong start, with both [Polaris and Arctic Cat] generating double-digit growth on the strength of new product introductions,” according to a monthly survey of 40 Polaris, Arctic Cat and multi-line ORV dealers by Longbow Research.

The survey also shows that year-over-year for October through November, dealers are “reporting extremely robust snowmobile sales, with growth averaging 23 percent among Arctic Cat dealers and 13 percent among Polaris dealers” likely due to strong snowcheck sales.

The report by analysts James Hardiman and Phil Anderson also says that Polaris side-by-sides continue to generate double-digit growth in the fourth quarter. Total ORV unit sales by Polaris dealers “are up about 6 percent so far during 4Q,” according to the report. ATVs saw mid-single-digit declines, the report says.

The report goes on to say that Longbow Research estimates “that side-by-sides as a whole have gone from representing no more than 15 percent of total ATV unit sales pre-2007 (prior to the introduction of the RZR) to representing more than 2/3 of the business today. …”

Longbow Research reports that Polaris ATV sales are “down roughly 4 percent during the fourth quarter, worse than the average 2 percent growth we saw during the third quarter. … Our contacts are now reporting side-by-sides sales growth of around 10 percent. …”
