Suzuki moves Japan motorcycle business
Suzuki Motor Corp. announced Monday that it will relocate its Japanese motorcycle business to another city in part to move its facilities further from the sea and also to consolidate its functions.
The company has purchased land in the Miyakoda Industrial Park located in north central Hamamatsu. There, it will develop the tentatively-called Miyakoda Technical Center for development and engineering of motorcycles and next-generation environmental vehicles and the Miyakoda Plant for the assembly of motorcycle engines.
The motorcycle development and engineering departments, which are currently housed in the Motorcycle Technical Center in Iwata City, and the environmental vehicle development department in the Hamamatsu Headquarter, will move to the Miyakoda Technical Center, which has a tentative open date of August 2016.
The assembly of motorcycles and possibly environmental vehicles, will be house in the Miyakoda Plant, which is expected to open in May 2017.
The move was prompted in part because the current Motorcycle Technical Center sits only 200 meters from the sea. As the company prepares for the anticipated Tokai earthquake, it has decided to move the motorcycle business given lessons learned during the earthquake that rocked Japan this past March. Suzuki will also restructure its domestic motorcycle development and production bases and consolidate their functions to improve efficiency.
