Yamaha’s motorcycle sales drop in North America

Yamaha Motor Co. saw a sharp decrease in its North American wholesale motorcycle unit sales in 2010, though it saw a slight jump in ATV sales.

The company sold 53,000 motorcycles wholesale in its 2010 fiscal year, a 42 percent drop from 2009. However, worldwide sales grew, especially in emerging markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. Global wholesale unit sales increased 19 percent.

North American ATV sales were up 2 percent from 2009, and worldwide net sales also increased 2 percent in that segment. Overall net sales for the company were up 12.2 percent, which equated to a 140.5 billion yen (about $1.7 billion U.S. dollars) increase.
