A look back at Canada’s 2009 retail bike, ATV sales

Retail sales in Canada of motorcycles and ATVs declined in 2009 compared to the year-ago period, but to a lesser extent than seen in the United States.

Motorcycle retail sales in Canada totaled 64,087 units in 2009, according to Canada’s Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council. That’s a 28 percent decline compared to 2008 and the first time in four years that two-wheel sales decreased. By category, street bike sales were off nearly 26 percent vs. 2008 while scooter sales fell by nearly 42 percent and off-road recreation bike sales declined by 29 percent.

For quads, ATV sales in Canada fell for a third straight year. This year’s sales totaled 59,797 units, a 26 percent decline from a year ago. The past two years saw much smaller percentage declines.
