Former AMA board chairman released from prison

Former American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Board Chairman Dal Smilie’s early release was granted last week by Fairfield County Judge Chris Martin, according to a press release from the AMA.

Smilie was found guilty of embezzling more than $100,000 from the AMA through fraudulent expense reports. He was sentenced to eight months, but was released after six weeks.

Judge Martin released Smilie under a 24-month community control program. Fairfield County Assistant Prosecutor Gregg Marx did not oppose the early release.

In addition, according to documents filed through the Supreme Court in Smilie’s home state of Montana, Smilie’s law license is under review in light of his conviction.
