First-quarter new unit sales fall more than 30 percent

First-quarter powersports industry new unit sales were down more than 30 percent compared to a year ago, a possible sign of the impact the ban on youth-designed ATVs and motorcycles has had nationwide.

New unit sales plummeted to 197,249, a 31.7 percent drop compared to the previous-year period, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.

ATV sales and off-highway sales, the two segments hit hardest by the ban on youth-designed vehicles that do not meet new lead regulations, were each down more than 33 percent. Off-highway sales were off close to 40 percent.

On-road motorcycle sales also dipped more than 27 percent below 2008 first-quarter levels.
