Piaggio Group’s U.S. sales soar 81 percent

Piaggio Group USA’s retail sales of scooters and motorcycles in the United States grew by 81.1 percent from January-August 2008, according to a company press release.

From January-August, Piaggio Group USA sold 18,894 vehicles to U.S. consumers, compared with 10,435 retail sales in the first eight months of 2007.

The company also reported a strong improvement in market share, which reached 27.3 percent of the scooter segment in 2008 (January-August), compared with 17.4 percent in 2005. According to MIC data, Piaggio’s share of the total U.S. two-wheeler market was 2.6 percent, up from 1.1 percent in 2005.

“The Piaggio Group has been consistently reporting strong growth in the United States since 2005, but this year it has surged ahead,” said Paolo Timoni, president and CEO of Piaggio Group USA. “This is due to the success of the Vespa brand and the discovery of the Aprilia brand in response to the growing demand for two-wheeler mobility in large American cities.”
