CPSC waits on ATV ruling

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says it has extended a comment period relating to a petition it received in October that asks that the sale of adult-sized ATVs to children under 16 years of age be banned.
The CPSC is currently preparing its own study of ATV-related injuries, and says members of the public should be allowed to view its study prior to the close of any comment period pertaining to the previously-received petition. The comment period deadline, originally planned for Dec. 17, 2002, has been moved to Mar. 16, 2003.
“Because the study has not been released,” says Todd Stevenson, CPSC secretary, “the Commission was concerned that a 60-day extension may not be adequate to allow interested members of the public sufficient time to review the study and comment on any issues related to the petition.”
Honda, Arctic Cat, Bombardier, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha also all requested an extension to the comment period.
