October motorcycle sales climb 6.1%

Motorcycle sales in 2003 continued strong with sales through October reaching 801,015 units, according to figures compiled by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). That’s an increase of 7.3% over the same period in 2002.

The highway segment continued to be the largest segment, posting sales of 515,249 units through October, up 6.0% over the same 10 months in 2002.

The fastest growing segment for the year was scooters, which grew at a rate of 18.7% over the 10 months. However, unit sales were only 42,084, about 5.3% of the total group sales.

Off-highway sales climbed 9.3% through October, reaching a total of 225,854 units.


ATVs, after a slow start in 2003, have shown strong growth in recent months. YTD through October, ATV sales were 637,138 units, up 5.0% for the year.
