Retail Sales Report September 8, 2003

ATV sales continue growth in July

ATV sales in 2003 continued to improve, with sales through July reaching 417,526 units, according to figures compiled by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). That’s close to even compared to the same period in 2002, but July sales climbed 3.1% or 1,867 units over July 2002.

The highway segment continued to be the largest segment, posting sales of 388,679 units through July, up 3.8% over the same seven months in 2002.

The fastest growing segment for the year was scooters, which grew at a rate of 13.5% over the seven months. However, unit sales were only 29,605, about 5% of total motorcycle sales.

Off-highway sales climbed 11.6% through July, reaching a total of 167,878 units. July off-highway sales were up 23.2%.

This report contains estimated retail unit sales of motorcycles, ATVs and scooters from warranty registrations provided by Aprilia, Arctic Cat, BMW, Bombardier, Buell, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian, KTM, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, and Yamaha from retail dealers. This report does not include total retail sales, since a small portion (less than 5%) of total retail sales is not reported through warranty registrations.
