Motorcycle, ATV sales rebound in December

Motorcycle and ATV sales rebounded in December after an off month in November, according to figures compiled by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). ATV sales were up 7.6% in December compared to December 2001. December sales were 98,173, up 6,906 units over the previous December. For the year, ATV sales hit 769,464 units, up 5.5% from 2001. December gains reversed a down trend in which 2002 ATV sales trailed 2001 sales in August, October and November.

Total motorcycle sales in December climbed 3.4% to 71,482 units, compared to the same month in 2001.

For the year, motorcycle sales reached 862,390 units, up 74,021 units or 9.4% from the 788,369 units sold in 2001.

This report contains estimated retail unit sales of motorcycles, ATVs and scooters from warranty registrations provided by Aprilia, Arctic Cat, BMW, Bombardier, Buell, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian, KTM, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, and Yamaha from retail dealers. This report does not include total retail sales, since a small portion (less than 5%) of total retail sales is not reported through warranty registrations.
