A 1970 Yamaha motorcycle stolen in Long Beach in 1971 and purchased by a Finnish buyer on eBay in 2005 was returned to its original owner in New England this week.
The 360cc bike, with only 9,380 miles on the odometer, was purchased online last September for $1,725. However, during the export process, the vehicle identification number turned up in the database of the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
The Long Beach Police Department, still in possession of the original theft report, then tracked down the original owner.
There were 21 bids for the bike, which was being sold by a resident of Visalia, Calif. Police say they do not suspect the seller in the 1971 theft.
