H-D Survey Promising

Harley-Davidson dealers are reporting increased first-quarter sales, with the Midwest being the strongest market, according to an A.G. Edwards & Sons survey.
Thirty-four dealers across 20 states reported January through March retail unit sales are up 6-7 percent. The Midwest was up 9 percent on average, followed by the East (up 7 percent), the South (up 4-5 percent) and the West (around 4 percent).
Better-than-normal weather across much of the country was one reason for the improved sales, the survey found.
The Touring Family (MSRP $16,995-$21,830) was mentioned as the best selling or one of the best selling families of bikes by the vast majority of dealers. V-Rod sales (MSRP $14,995 – $17,355) were mentioned as the weakest across the country.
Dealers surveyed are comfortable with their inventory position, with 85 percent feeling good about the quality and level of their current inventory. Fewer dealers now feel their inventory level is “heavy” – 15 percent compared to 22 percent in the fourth quarter of 2005.
The survey, which represents about 5 percent of Harley-Davidson’s U.S. domestic dealer base, is skewed toward the large dealerships in major metropolitan areas.
