VW Shows Three-Wheeler in L.A.

Volkswagen presented a three-wheeled concept vehicle earlier this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show that crosses the line between motorcycle and automobile.
Designed by Volkswagen’s Design Center California (DCC), the two-seat GX3 is powered by a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine producing 125 hp and 112.5 ft-lbs. of torque. Weighing a mere 1,257 lbs., the unit can reach 62.5 mph in 5.7 seconds, according to Volkswagen, which also says that the vehicle has a range of approximately 46 mpg.
The 215/45 R17x8J front wheels are controlled by a double lateral steering axle, and the single 18″x12″ rear wheel, attached to an exposed single sided swingarm, is dressed with 315 rubber. Power is delivered via six-speed transmission and chain drive.
Other design cues include a central exhaust, anodized gold and black suspension components, LED lighting, five point racing harnesses, and “moto” style instruments.
The German car manufacturer says the GX3 was conceived exclusively with the U.S. in mind. The company says a production counterpart of the GX3 “could be on the market very soon” with a price just under $17,000.
