Texas Attorney General: Poker Runs Illegal

In an opinion shared December 27, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot says “poker runs” held by motorcycle clubs for charity are considered illegal gambling.
The attorney general said the events are similar to a lottery, and said the law also considers any organization that keeps part of the proceeds for charity a violation of the state’s prohibition on gambling.
Abbott’s ruling specifically addressed a poker run held by the Blue Knights, a motorcycle club comprised of active and retired police officers, after a citizen’s complaint to the Galveston County Criminal District Attorney’s Office asked that their poker run be cancelled.
Still, many believe the decision could open the door to outlaw all such fund-raising activities by nonprofit groups.
