BRP To Shift ATV Production To Mexico

Bombardier Recreational Products plans to shift production of all ATVs from its hometown of Valcourt, Quebec, to Juarez, Mexico, where the company builds Johnson outboard engines and its 3D models of personal watercraft. The company made the announcement Nov. 2, saying that it will spend $30 million on the project over the next three years.
BRP also will begin building Rotax engines in Mexico, as well. It’s the first time that the Austrian company has expanded outside Austria in 85 years. Rotax is a subsidiary of BRP and builds engines for its ATVs. It’s uncertain where the engines will be built, said a BRP spokesman, but the existing plant doesn’t have room for Rotax engine production.
A strong Canadian dollar and increased Asian competition forced the move, the company said.
Ski-Doo snowmobiles and Sea-Doo watercraft will continue to be built in Valcourt where BRP is completing a $10 million facilities upgrade.
