Harley-Davidson recalls 29,000 motorcycles

Harley-Davidson has issued a voluntary recall for certain 2014 touring bikes equipped with a hydraulic clutch system that may fail.

The recall, which Harley-Davidson implemented on its own during the government shutdown, affects 25,185 touring FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLHTKSE and FLHRSE models, and 3,861 Softtail CVOs and trikes, including the FLHTCUTG, FXSBSE and FLSTNSE. A Do Not Ride notice has been issued to owners of those units, and a Do Not Deliver notice has been given to dealers.

In the affected units, the hydraulic clutch system may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch, which could cause riders to have issues slowing or stopping the motorcycles. Owners of those bikes are being asked to bring their units to a Harley-Davidson dealer for an inspection. The free repair is expected to take less than one hour.

“The safety of our customers is our highest priority,” said Tony Wilcox, Harley-Davidson general manager of Motorcycle New Product Delivery. “We have identified potential safety issues and are moving quickly to notify our customers and dealers. The inspection and repair of these motorcycles is extremely important, so it’s critical that our customers with affected vehicles contact their dealers immediately. We apologize for this circumstance. The company is committed to correcting the issues and providing customers with the quality experience and service they expect.”
