‘Clearly the competitive gauntlet has been thrown down’: analyst

Following the relaunch of Indian Motorcycles on Aug. 3 in Sturgis, S.D., Wells Fargo Securities analyst Tim Conder provided a research note to Powersports Business.

“Clearly the competitive gauntlet has been thrown down. However, in the near term we believe (1) other competitive heavyweight brands beside Harley will see pressure first from Indian, (2) investors will keep in perspective the global size differential of Harley ~261.5K units (2013 guidance midpoint) vs. Indian. At the earliest, we feel it will be 2015, before Indian presents a material competitive threat to HOG,” Conder reports.

Conder also notes that the “very strong” relaunch should enable Polaris “to achieve its goal of 125-140 North American and 70 international dealers by year-end 2013.”
