Motorcycle thefts down slightly

Thefts of motorcycles decreased 1 percent in 2012 when compared to 2011, according to a recent report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) based on National Crime Information Center (NCIC) data.

In total, 46,061 motorcycles were stolen in 2012, a decrease of 606 thefts from 2011. American Honda Motor Company, Inc., had the highest reported thefts, with 9,082 bikes stolen in 2012. Yamaha Motor Corporation followed with 7,517. American Suzuki Motor Corporation (7,017), Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. (4,839) and Harley Davidson, Inc. (3,755) were also among the top five stolen brands.

California led all states in motorcycle thefts in 2012 with 6,082 bikes stolen. Florida (4,110), Texas (3,400), North Carolina (2,574) and Indiana (2,334) followed. The most thefts were reported in July 2012, with 5,529.
