Big 4 motorcycle exports down 26% in June

Following several months of declines, motorcycle exports from Japan’s Big Four motorcycle brands fell again in June 2013, according to the latest data from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

The Big Four — Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha — exported 25,831 units in June, compared with 35,306 units recorded for the same month of the previous year. This is a decrease of 9,475 units, or 26.8 percent, and a decrease on the same month of the previous year for nine consecutive months.

Regionally, Oceania was up nearly 140 percent, while the rest of the world was down. Asia’s exports were 70.2 percent of their level from the previous year, with Europe, North America and Latin America following suit at 70.8, 81.7 and 44.9 percent.

By manufacturer, Honda’s exports were down a dramatic 56.4 percent from the previous year, while Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki came in at 84.2, 81.7 and 69.6 percent of last year’s June figures.

In terms of classes, the 50cc or under class declined 26.3 percent, the 51-125cc class dropped 21 percent, 126-250cc was down 4,380 units (53.1 percent) and the over 250cc class fell 18.4 percent.

Production figures were similar, if not as harsh, showing 36,214 units produced compared with 41,984 units recorded for the same month of the previous year. This is a decrease of 5,770 units, or 13.7 percent.

Suzuki increased its monthly production total by 7.5 percent, while Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki all decreased year-over-year to 78.3, 89.5 and 57.6 percent compared with June 2012.
