N.Y. dealer hit by Sandy has no set timetable for power restoration

No phone. No Internet. No computer. So how is one supposed to run a business? Long Island-based Yamaha Suzuki Can-Am Victory of Mineola is operating a limited capacity since Hurricane Sandy hit the area Monday.

Owner Phil Zegarek said via email that his shop has been open, using a generator for lighting, but it’s unknown when things will get back to normal. The timetable for power restoration could run three days to three weeks from now. But Zagarek is trying to stay positive, even though 90 percent of his community is without electricity.

“Fortunately all of us are fine,” he said via email. “Hopefully things will get better during the next few days.”

Other dealerships are also feeling the affects of the storm. Calls to a dealership in New Jersey won’t go through; dealerships in New Jersey and Maryland closed early Monday and opened late Tuesday; a dealership in Brooklyn is closed until further notice, and other dealerships have reported similar affects.

  1. Update: I texted with Phil again today. He said his home finally has power, but he’s still running the dealership off a generator, and only during the daytime hours. He’s waiting for a big shipment of Yamaha generators for his customers.
