Rider dies in first stage of Dakar

Argentinean rider Jorge Andres Martinez Boero, motorcycle No. 175, died Sunday during the first stage of the Dakar Rally after suffering a fall and cardiac arrest.

Martinez Boero, 38, fell at 10:19 a.m. at km 55 during the special stage between Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa in Argentina, according to a Dakar Rally press release. Medical staff responded by helicopter within five minutes of the crash, but doctors were unable to resuscitate him after he suffered cardiac arrest, and he died en route to the hospital.

Martinez Boero was participating in his second Dakar. Last year he withdrew during the sixth stage of the rally. Organizers of the Dakar offered “heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones” in the release.

So far, the Dakar has claimed three lives, according to the Associated Press. In addition to Martinez Boero’s passing, a pilot of an ultralight plane and his son died when the plane crashed while following the race Sunday.

French motorcyclist Sebastien Coue is also in critical condition after he was found unconscious after a crash during the second stage. Officials at Teodoro J. Schestakow Hospital told the Associated Press that Coue was exposed to temperatures above 104 degrees before being found, and his body temperature exceeded 104 degrees during that period. It is unknown how long he had been exposed to the heat.
