Australian powerboard headed to U.S.

Scarpar, the Australian manufacturer of a new range of powerboards, has announced its vehicles are near completion and will be sold largely through powersports dealers once shipping to the U.S. starts next year.

The flagship model X powerboard, which resembles a snowboard or skateboard with two articulating all-terrain tracks, will be able to travel at speeds of up to 32 mph and distances of about 20 miles per charge. It features 3,000 watts of constant power and 6,000 watts of peak power. The battery pack takes five hours to charge but can be replaced by a spare battery if available.

Per-orders for the vehicles have already been placed in the United States, Europe and Australia. The first vehicles will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

“We’ve been killing ourselves to make Christmas, but we think it’s going to end up being Q1. We are OK with this,” CEO Andrew Fern said. “When you consider that we have 550 parts in total and a complex electric system which includes regenerative braking and other technology integrations, the scale of the task we’ve had starts to become clearer. This has never been done before and it’s been a massive job with every part having a story.”

The Scarpar powerboards have been designed and engineered by partner EDAG, a German-based automotive engineering company with clients including BMW, Volkswagen and Airbus. Learn more about the powerboards by visiting Scarpar.com.
