JAMA shows export increase to U.S. in August

Recent statistics released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) show that exports from Japan to the U.S. in August were up 38.6 percent compared to August 2010. Japanese OEMs exported 9,353 bikes to the U.S. in August 2011.

Exports to the U.S. were a bright spot for Japanese OEMS, as overall exports in August were down 3.3 percent. Exports in August were 32,938 bikes overall, compared to 34,045 bikes in August 2010. The overall decrease ended two months in a row of increases on the same month of the previous year.

The value of motorcycle units and parts exports overall from Japan in August was $296.876 million. That’s a 10.8 percent, or $28.974 million, increase from August 2010.

Bike exports to Europe declined by 27.4 percent compared to August 2010, while exports to Latin America increased by 34.8 percent compared to August 2010. Bike export unit totals for August 2011 were as follows: Europe, 10,446; North America, 9,806; and Latin America, 4,156.

Overall production of bikes from Japanese OEMs in August increased 3.7 percent compared to August 2010. It’s a production increase on the same month of the previous year for four consecutive months. Production of 126-250cc bikes was up 24.7 percent compared to August 2010.
