Claudio Castiglioni dies from illness

Claudio Castiglioni, the president of MV Augusta and an industry veteran, died Wednesday in Varese, Italy, after a fight with an illness. He was 64.

Castiglioni not only spent more than 15 years with MV Augusta, but he also excelled with Cagiva, Ducati and Husqvarna, according to a press release from MV Augusta.

Castiglioni began his career working in the family business, specializing in metalworking and manufacturing before founding Cagiva in 1978. Cagiva developed new and innovative motorcycles that influenced the market in the 1980s and ’90s. Following on that success, Castiglioni later purchased Ducati, Husqvarna and MV Augusta.

Throughout his career, racing was one of Castiglioni’s passions. Cagiva won World Motocross Championships and triumphs in the Paris-Dakar desert race. Under Castiglioni’s leadership, Ducati dominated entire seasons of the World Superbike Championship. And while Castiglioni owned Husqvarna, the OEM earned world championships in Enduro, Motocross and Supermotard.

Castiglioni left the guidance of MV Augusta to his son Giovanni for the past year. Castiglioni’s funeral was held in Varese, Italy, today.
