Strong Q1 interest in pre-owned, KBB data shows

Sport bikes show 113 percent increase in KBB.com views

Sport bike’s averaged a 113 percent increase in views on Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com site in the first quarter of 2013, according to data provided exclusively to Powersports Business.

The models receiving the most hits for each vehicle type in Q1 2013 averaged an 81 percent increase in KBB.com web hits over Q4 2012.
Harley-Davidson again dominated the cruiser category. As in the past, the 2010 through 2012 model years are only lightly represented, with most interest occurring in the 2006 through 2009 model years.

All four Japanese OEMs are represented in the sport bike category, with the 2007 Suzuki GSX-R600 once again in the top spot. Eight of the top 10 models also appeared on the Q4 2012 top 10 list.

“The top 10 for dirt bikes seem to indicate that consumers have strong loyalties to particular bikes,” said Lisa Pelissier, senior powersports analyst for Kelley Blue Book. “Nine of the top 10 bikes in the over 400cc category were represented by only two models — the Kawasaki KLR650 and the Honda CRF450R. These two models show significantly more interest than bikes further down on the list, with the No. 2 bike having 27 percent more hits than the No. 3 bike.”

Strong loyalties also appeared in the under 400cc category, with the Honda CRF250R taking four of the top five spots. Nine of the top 10 most researched dirt bikes under 400cc are four-stroke motocross bikes, and most bikes in both categories repeat their appearance on the top 10 list after also appearing in Q4 2012.

The most viewed scooter was the 2009 Yamaha Zuma 125, up 95 percent from Q4 2012. The 2009 Honda Ruckus NPS50 followed, up 63 percent. The 2008 and 2007 Suzuki Burgman cracked the top six.

“The only vehicle to receive fewer web hits in Q1 2013 than in Q4 2012 was the 2007 Suzuki Burgman 400, which previously held the No. 1 spot but now has fallen to sixth place,” she said. “Interest in the top 10 scooters increased by 66 percent for Q1 2013.”
